The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has already released the 2021 ranking for congress and convention destinations, and Portugal is once again in the spotlight. The country is now in the 6th place in the European ranking, rising one position compared to 2019. In the world ranking, it rises to the 7th place, being 10th in 2019.
The city of Lisbon also remains in the 'top ten', consolidating 2nd place in both european and world rankings. Porto follows the country's trend and rises in both classifications, occupying the 14th and 16th positions, in the European and world rankings, respectively.

Since the years 2020 and 2021 were atypical for all tourism segments, notably in meeting&incentives, ICCA developed the Destination Performance Index (DPI) in order to recognize and reward the effort of the destinations with regard to: winning the original bid, COVID policies, adaptability and technological capabilities to convert events on site into virtual/hybrid events, maintaining business continuity. DPI is thus based on specific performance indicators, which allow the measurement of the results of the targets.

With the purpose of projecting the image of the country and creating attractiveness throughout the year and throughout the territory, Turismo de Portugal has developed financial support programmes to capture and hold congresses and events. In total, since 2016, the programme M&I Portugal, has supported 347 new congresses for the country. In 2020 and 2021, despite the Covid context, this programme still captured 30 events and congresses. The new programme Portugal Events has already captured 73 international/national congresses for 2022.
