The hotel is located in the foothills of Monsaraz, a parish in the district of Reguengos de Monsaraz.
Monsaraz castle, conquered from the Moors in 1167, has over the years played a key sentinel role, watching over the border with Castile.
Horta da Moura, a rural 4 star hotel, opened in 1991 and became the first rural hotel in Alentejo.
After being acquired in 2009 by its current owners, the hotel was completely remodelled and new reception, restaurant,
stable and swimming pool facilities were built from the ground up. Monsaraz has been on the shore of the largest artificial lake in Europe since 2002: Alqueva.
It is very easy to get to the lake from the hotel on foot, as the distance is just 800 metres. In 2007, Monsaraz was one of the finalists in the competition to chose the "7 Wonders of Portugal".
